Carolina Wrens Part 2

by John
(Broken Arrow, OK)

About 10 years ago I had a pair of wrens nest in an old tin can I had out by the BBQ grill.

Because there was a prowling neighborhood cat, I feared for the little ones safety, so I nailed the can to the side of the wall.

Momma and Papa wren didn't care and raised the little guys just fine. To my surprise one very hot summer day, the little wrens hopped out of the can and into the yard.

My recollection was that from egg to fledgling the time was less than 3 weeks!

I live in a different neighborhood now but maybe those little wrens told the story of how I took care of them to their offspring.

I now have three more wren children growing up in our storage barn on a shelf there inside a wicker basket.

The problem is that we now have a very protective dog patrolling the yard. When the little wrens hop out of the nest, they'd be goners.

The nest is close to the woods behind the fence. Do you suppose if I moved it back there once the little ones are of chirping size, Mom and Pop would find the little guys?
