Bubblegum

by Ellen
(Dunedin, FL)

We were traveling from Florida to Ohio and had stopped in Kentucky for a short visit to Ken Ham's Answers In Genesis Creation Science Museum.

Around eight o'clock in the morning one of our kids found a little pink glob on the black-topped parking lot of the hotel.

Not a tree in sight, but "Bubblegum" became the name of the tiny bird, still stuck to its shell.

Our eleven-year-old son spent the day trying to nurse it to health. The gardens around the museum were misted, so he misted the bird and dug for small insects right there, pretty well missing the museum.

The bird died the next afternoon. It tried so hard to live. We just didn't have the right stuff.

Yesterday our son found a bird egg which he has been trying to hatch after candling it and seeing movement.

It is clear from previous experience and from reading this site that his efforts will probably be fruitless.

Where can a young person get help in learning to care for animals? Our local bird and animal rescue groups have so far given the strong message that they do not like kids.

When we leave a bird with them, our kids are supposed to just forget about it and not ask any more questions concerning how the animal fared.

Your son sounds like he is on the right path to becoming a naturalist. If he is successful in hatching the little bird, tell him the baby bird will survive for the first two days off of the yolk of the egg which it absorbs in the shell just before hatching. It is not necessary for him to try to feed the new born.

My friend, a native of the Philippines, raises birds from abandoned eggs people find and give to her. She feeds them tiny bits of lettuce when they are ready to eat. She is very successful in raising them. Warmth and a snug place are the most important requirements when the baby bird hatches. Good luck.
