Bluebird Evicted by Sparrows

by Lorna Carignan
(Mt. Morris, MI )

Hi to any Eastern bluebird watchers,

We had been enjoying our first pair of mating bluebirds. From watching them claim, and move into the new house which my husband made.

We were so please when they moved in and started building. Later the sparrows had noticed the house was there but the bluebirds were able to keep them away for weeks now.

But this past Sunday, yesterday, the house sparrows had driven them away and destroyed the eggs inside as I found only two on the ground outside this morning. My heart is hurting for our bluebird pair:-(

MY Question is what can we do now and can we attract our pair back??? I can't tell if the sparrows have added any other nesting materials.

I've plugged the hole with a large stick nub so the long end is in the hole and only part of the root end sticks out.

I'm ready to shoot if only I had a gun.......the BB gun we use to have when I was a kid comes to mind.

I know vengeance belongs to the Lord but right now this is our bluebird's Goliath and I'm out for blood. Besides there is safety in a multitude of counselors.

Thanks to anyone. Please write to us at: LteamL@aol.com Please title the subject Help BlueBirds so my husband doesn't delete it.

Every bird lover needs to be educated on the destruction House Sparrows and European Starlings can do. Our native species have not developed defenses and behaviors to protect themselves from these pest.

There are some steps bluebird landlords can take to try and protect their houses from House Sparrows.
