Bluebird Baby

Baby blue bird, 30 min before fledging

Baby blue bird, 30 min before fledging

I sent a story about our first successful bluebird family, but am not able to find it so I don't know it I did it properly or if it was printed.

Anyway, my husband and I did watch a male and female bluebird feed and care for their four babies until they fledged. We watched the first one make that first flight.

Everything was marvelous and we did see the family a few times together, but usually the male would come for the meal worms and disappear.

He always came back until the worms were all gone and occasionally, we would add a few more if he stayed and waited very long.

3 wks later, another family used the same, freshly cleaned, house and 4 baby bluebirds hatched.

Everything seemed to be fine until this morning, when we discovered the babies are gone! The nest is perfect, not even disturbed at all. No sign of trouble in any way, just empty.

Is this normal, is there something we can do to prevent this in the future. We do have the bluebird house on a pole about 5 feet from the ground with a guard underneath the house to keep predators away.

I apologize if this is just a repeat, but I could not find my story and am in desperate need of advice.

We so love the bluebirds. Well, all birds actually.

Thank you for any help you might give us.

Blue Birds
by: Susie

Hi from NH; my bluebirds have had several babies, I don't know how many because they are still in the nest chirping. How long does it take them to fly on their own? I am keeping my three outdoor cats in until they are gone....they are not too happy. It has been almost two months. Susie

Predators
by: From Wild-Bird-Watching.com

House Sparrows will remove damage eggs and remove baby bluebirds and throw them on the ground. Other predators will find the young on the ground and feed on them.

All predators guards are not created equal. Look closely, a 1/4 inch gap can let a snake through.

You must be willing to control House Sparrows if you want to have bluebirds. House Sparrows are not protected species and do great harm to our native species. For even more information and tips please see:

The website above can be of great help.

us too!

We read your article with much interest as we just had the same thing happen to us. We are devastated. We did the same thing...got the pole with the ballast, at least 10 feet away from trees. The babies were 1 week old. I fed the momma this am and she took the worms to the nest. She did not enter however and then the pappa tried looking in. This happened several times. Then they sat upon the box and (I think) mourned. We've cleaned the box and we're hoping someone might have an idea what happened so we can take steps to prevent the tragic loss again. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
