Bluebird At Our Windows

by Nancy
(Hendersonville, NC)

I am hoping someone can explain the weird behavior of the female bluebird who has been at our windows recently -- staying there for most of the day, hanging onto the screen and going back and forth; sitting on the birdhouse and then back to hanging onto the screen.

This is the 2nd day now. I was curious about this behavior and thought maybe she had built her nest, so I looked into the birdhouse. No nest has even been started.

The male has been around a lot, too....spending time just hanging out around the birdhouse. We have bluebirds every spring, and sometimes have had the pleasure of watching fledgings when they leave the nest.

We never have seen this behavior before, living in the same house for 25 years.

Does anyone out there have any answers for us? We are very perplexed!

Bluebird House
by: Diane

About two summers ago I noticed a strange thing at my bluebird house so I went to check to see why the male bluebird was just sitting with his head in the house, and when I got near the bird didn't fly away, so I touched him, and he fell to the ground. All the feathers around his head were gone, so I opened the front of the house and there was a BIG black snake curled up in the house WOW! That scared the life out of me. I'm grateful my husband was home that day, and got the snake out got for me Hope you never have that experience Diane

ihad a tananger that did the same. Pecking at windows
by: Anonymous

Hi, I didn't have a bluebird at my windows and don't know why they do it but two summers in a row I had a male tananger do the same thing. He would come to the window just like he was looking in and then fly up and down for awhile right around the window and then peck at the window again, Sure would like to know why they do that, and boy! what a mess my windows were, but I wouldn't have changed anything.I hope they come back again this year. I feed them suet. You would be surprised at the variety of birds i get at the suet Diane Fayetteville NC

Bluebird's Strange Behavior
by: Fayetteville, NC

Unfortunately I do not have any answers for why your bluebirds are hanging around the window but I do have a question of my own. About 3 weeks ago I too had a pair of bluebirds around my window but the strange part is that every morning and mid-afternoon the male would fly into my window make four or five hits before perching on the brick surrounding the window. He seemed to be looking inside and then fly away to join the female who was perched in a tree nearby. This has been a daily ocurrence but the last week and a half the female has been absent. I have a fern hanging in the window so I removed it thinking he was unsuccessful attempting to land in the fern. This has not made a difference. We placed a bluebird house nearby but it has been ignored.

At first my fear was that he was going to hurt himself, but after three weeks I am now curious of this strange behavior. I too would love an explanation behind this oddity.

Would appreciate any insight.
