Bird in Geranium Plant

by Cherrie Call

I am very new to "birding." About the only birds I have in my back yard are sparrows, black birds and an occasional Cardinal, (my favorite) and a pair of humming birds.

My daughter gave me a beautiful Geranium hanging basket for Mother's Day this year. I stepped out on my deck this morning to have my coffee and noticed a "mess" on top of one of my tables. It was twigs and leaves. I noticed a little bird sitting patiently on the back of one of the chairs with a piece of grass in his little beak.

I quickly got my little poodle in hand and we went back inside to watch from the door. Then the bird went to the hanging basket and right back out. He was building a nest in the basket! I was so excited. Now, how will I water my plant without running the bird off its nest?

I was able to feed about 7 little sparrows a couple of summers ago and watch them mature and fly away! They sure did eat a lot and were quite messy and noisy, but it was well worth the effort.

I don't have a picture to submit.

The Babies Have Arrived!!!!!
by: Cherrie

The wrens that built their nest in my geranium plant have been very busy. This morning I was having coffee on my deck, and something with sharp "nails" jump up on my arm, of course scaring me to pieces and causing me to spill my hot coffee all over my lap!

It was one of the wrens making her way to their "Garden House" to feed the new babies!!! I was able to peek into the nest tonight and there were two little baby wrens with their mouths open for food. I sure hope I will be blessed by being able to see them grow and mature and leave the nest. This has been so interesting to watch.

The geranium is still alive! I have been able to get a little water to it by using a squeeze bottle.

God has made the most interesting creatures for our pleasure. I truly thank Him for that blessing.

watering plant with bird nest in it
by: Sue

We have a hanging begonia plant and the last few days carolina wrens have been building their nest in it. Now I am wondering if anyone knows how I can water the plant without chasing the birds away and also ruin their nest.
I will have to take the plant down from the hanging hook to see what I am doing and I'm afraid doing that will scare the birds away.
I don't think there are any eggs yet as they continue to add stuff to the nest.
