Akooah The Baby Waxwing Bird

by Amanda Marie
(Boston, MA)

One day I took my 11 year old brother and his friends to the park. We were just swinging on the swings until a young boy came over with a baby bird perched on a thin stick.

He told us he saved the bird and wanted to keep it from harm. My brother is a huge nature freak and wanted to take it back to our home which is right up the street.

We took the stick (along with the bird) from the boy who swung the stick because he wanted the bird to fly.

Once at our home, we went online to see what the baby bird was but had no luck. We also called a Rehabilitation Center and they never called back so we set up an old cage with bedding for the baby bird.

He slept right away and cheeped when he wanted to be fed. We cut up worms, berries, and seeds and filled them into a bowl containing a bit of water, so the bird got its food and water.

In a matter of 2 days, new feathers started to come in and Akooah (the baby Cedar Waxwing Bird) could hover for at least 3 seconds.

He grew very fond of my mother and I, he flew to us and chirped when we came into the room. We started to see Akooah developing and decided to go online and check again to see what he was. We finally came up with Cedar Waxwing Bird.

Akooah is chirping as we speak, but after reading some info on this page, we are deciding what to do. We would never wish to stress the poor thing, and we would not want him to die in the wild.

We just wanted to do the right thing, but sooner realized the "right thing" may be more wrong than right. We hope the short summary of what occurred helps you to tell us what is right.

We moved Akooah into a larger bird cage for now, and are awaiting further directions to what to do with our now flying baby bird.

Cedar Waxwing baby

Amanda, your story about Akooah is adorable. I'm sure you're doing the best you can, considering you had no clue as to where the baby was originally found.

When my sis and I were in junior high, we took care of a baby sparrow that had fallen from a nest in our school gym. We fed it grasshoppers and would take it out to sit on a tree limb in our yard, and then run from it so it would get flying practice chasing after us LOL

As time went by, "Susie" spent more time outside altho' she'd come back at night and perch on the brick ledge outside our living room window. We'd bring her in when we saw her. Gradually she returned to the wild.

You could do this with your Cedar Waxwing, and could find out what sort of bird house they like, to put one in your yard for Akooah to use, as you begin to let her rediscover the great outdoors. May God bless you and Akooah.
