A Nest within a Nest

Mama bird in her fancy maternity basket

Imagine our surprise and delight when a nest appeared along with two eggs in a hanging basket on the front porch of my shop!

They never leave and seem to appreciate the seed and water placed in the basket close to the nest. They are not timid or skittish and even let us pet them very gently on the back a bit.

I have a remote camera set up connected via our web and we watch on camera the nest via our computer.

It is absolutely fascinating!

Update

Baby Doves 1 Week

These babies are one week old. They were hatched the size of my thumbnail.

This week the feathers are evident and mama & dad are busy feeding their growing children.

Dad seems a bit uninterested but does come in the late afternoons to give mama a break.

Water Your Plants!
by: Tom Carter

You can water your plants very gently opposite side from the nest. They won't mind and the chicks will only be there two or three weeks after they hatch. It is exciting and goes by fast!

Have hanging basket with nest!!
by: Peg

We have a beautiful morning Dove that has taken up residency in our hanging flower baskets on our front porch. She is beautiful and not afraid of us or our visits over to see her progress.
It really is amazing and my 5 year old loves going out every morning to check on her.

The flowers however are dying, because I'm afraid to water the plants and harm the eggs.
I have photo's but don't know how to add them to this page?

We have chicks this AM!
by: T. Carter

Yes, you can touch them. We only did it one time. Two fingers and only on the back. Very gently.
We have two new arrivals this morning and mama is very busy taking care of the chicks. It is fascinating!

You can touch them!?
by: Anonymous

Wow. This I have not heard before. I saved one baby dove and nursed it until the parents returned. I was so relieved (the sibling did not fare as well).

Believe me, I found a support system for their make-shift nests for future seasons, and, low and behold, I had a pair show up this year. They (are they the same couple?) are on round THREE!

Guess the support system works! I say hello to them whenever I am around, esp. first thing in the morning and when I get home from work. My kids think I am nuts (perhaps). You are right.

They are very tolerant birds, however, I have NEVER attempted to touch them. I'd have to get a ladder to do so as they are at the top beam of our patio covering.

I am fascinated that you can do this and they do not flinch. That is pretty astounding!
